If monthly titles were pared down to a manageable 15 a month to concentrate on wider audiences with paperbacks and hardcovers, which would you choose as survivors?

My list:
BATMAN
DETECTIVE (double-sized): Batman/Nightwing
GOTHAM KNIGHTS (double-sized):
Robin, Catwoman, Birds of Prey, Gotham Central rotate in back

SUPERMAN
ACTION COMICS
SUPERMAN/BATMAN

JLA
JSA
FLASH
GREEN LANTERN
GREEN ARROW
WONDER WOMAN
HAWKMAN
TEEN TITANS
LEGION

I think you meant if the DC Implosion were to happen in 2003, not Explosion. The Explosion added a bunch of new titles. The Implosion pared it down to 20, but I'll play.

First, all 15 titles would be 48 pagers.

Action Comics
Superman lead feature with Atom back ups

Batman
Batman lead feature with Robin back up

Batman Family
3 features. Nightwing and Birds of Prey in every issue. Catwoman, Batgirl, Huntress, etc. rotating feature.

Brave and the Bold
Batman and ?? lead feature. 2 random hero team-up back up.

Detective Comics
Batman lead feature with Martian Manhunter back ups

Flash
Flash lead feature with Firestorm back ups.

Green Lantern
Green Lantern lead feature with Martian Manhunter back ups

JLA
Full-length JLA stories with occasional back ups featuring Elongated Man, Zatanna, etc.

JSA
Full-length JSA stories with occasional back ups of solo members.

Legion
Full-length LSH stories with occasional back ups of solo members.

Superman
Superman lead feature with Hawkman back ups

Superman Family
3 features. Superboy and Supergirl in every issue. Rotating 3rd feature with Steel, Thorn, Gangbuster, etc.

Teen Titans
Full-length Teen Titan stories with occasional back ups of solo members (except Robin, Superboy and Wonder Girl).

Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman lead feature with Wonder Girl back ups

World's Finest Comics
3 features. Batman/Superman stories with Aquaman and Green Arrow back ups.

Correction on Green Lantern. I meant L.E.G.I.O.N. back ups but lost it while rearranging during cut and paste.

Making any of the remaining books extra-sized feels like cheating to get around the 15-title limit. Assume these are all regular-sized:

Action
Superman
Detective
Batman
Gotham Central
Brave & Bold
JLA
JSA
Legion
Flash
Green Lantern
Green Arrow
Wonder Woman
Adventure Comics--rotating features of major DC heroes without their own titles; Aquaman, Atom, Catwoman,Black Canary, Hawkman etc.--2 stories per issue
--and leave one slot open for a brand-new concept

You know, if there was a slot in the back of each issue for back up stories with our favorite characters who would be losing titles - I think it's not a bad approach.

Characters I'd like to see in back ups would be:

IMPULSE
YOUNG JUSTICE
DR. FATE
THE SPECTRE (Jim Corrigan, NOT Hal)
THE DEMON
THE NEW GODS
MISTER MIRACLE
THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS.
SWAMP THING
SUPERGIRL
HAL JORDAN (in the flesh again, please)
BARRY ALLEN (in the flesh again, please)
HAWKMAN
PLASTIC MAN

Okay, I'm exhausted now.

You're right... "implosion" would be more accurate. I was originally going to pare down to 20 like in '78 but I found it to be too generous considering how much of the line is clogged up with Superman and Batman books. I see this as a mid-point to the conversion many people foresee away from standard comic book format.

However, double sizing books wouldn't be "cheating" since even in the implosion, Dollar Comics -- more than double sized the regular books-- picked up many features. Besides, Detective and Gotham Knights already have extra pages although they usually aren't worth the space. If they got closer to a Prestige format, they could be carried in more bookstores.

Adventure Comics has failed as an umbrella title so many times I doubt we'll see it again. It's a shame, I was rooting for that 80 Page Giant in the 90s to do well.

Gotham Knights's backups ("Black & White") are usually the reason I pick up the book.
